This week, I have been trying to find out as such as I can possibly can with regards about coffee and different flavours. I managed to find a fantastic, knowledgable man, James Hoffman (https://www.jameshoffmann.co.uk/). He has over 20 years of knowledge within the coffee industry and sure has it, competing in some coffee competitions and succeeding.

He has taught me so much within coffee tasting within one video, more than I could ever imagine. My goal here is to make my blend to put into my tabletop gaming café. Me thinking it was going to be an easy journey, Oh boy, was I wrong. I am writing to say that I have learnt a lot from one video. That, I did. The number one important fact that I have stuck in my head is that fruity coffee flavours have more acidity taste and more enjoyed by professional coffee drinkers. Which makes me think, that I may need to have a fair few different blends to cover all variety of coffee lovers.

Since this nice little eye-opener, I’m now in a rabbit whole of coffee beans. Check this out.

Coffee Fact: Did you know if you feel dehydrated/ needing a wee 20 minutes after a coffee, the coffee granules used, has mould on them. A good tip on cleaning your coffee maker is as follows:

Put a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water in a clean coffee maker.

Brew the mix until it is a dark colour. Empty the pot, rinse thoroughly with clear water two or three times, and replace with fresh water for brewing.

Run one to four cycles of plain filtered/spring water through your machine before you use it to brew your next pot of coffee.

I found the cleaning tip from a from Spirited Animal coffee (https://spiritanimalcoffee.com/) again, this website is full of good knowledge in regard to coffee and cupping, roasting you name it, they more than likely got it.

Apparently, Japan has a law on the mould control on the beans. If they are refused, they are then sent to America, as there is no law in regard to mould on beans in the US. Think I saw a clip of this somewhere in regard to this info.

After great consideration, (i.e. a lot of reading and research, mainly from spiritedanimalcoffee.com) my ultimate goal would be to get into partnership with a Kona coffee farm. I found one, where they have their own beans as well as sale green beans. I am going to buy one of each bag and give them a try before committing. Hearing a lot of good things in regard to Kona coffee. Would be great if I can use their beans in my café whilst I have a wee play on making my own coffee and start introducing it to the locals. Having the pleasure to also share the local’s favourite and send the farm a batch to get their opinions on the flavour.

Searching for farms, has got to be the hardest. Saying that, I managed to find what seems to be an ideal farm within hours. You got to dig deep for them. Not as easy as a Google search to hand you out a list of farms to pick from to find farms is slight graft. It usually helps with what your goal is for your coffee. Kona has a good vibes in me to go for. Whether this happens or not, I can only keep my fingers crossed.

At this point in time, this has taken me a week to write this post. The Longest I’ve ever spent writing a post. I have found a couple of farms that I am interested in. I will find the cupping video that James Hoffman made and purchase a couple of different brands to see whether I can taste the difference between the two. Train my tongue to notice the differences between the coffees that I purchase. Once I feel I have developed a good understanding of coffee tasting, I shall purchase my first couple Kona Coffees and try them both to see which one I prefer between the 2. I may not even like the coffee myself and would need to explore another farms. I’m sure this is part of the whole experience, which I am excited to explore.
