Anime enthusiasts often find themselves engrossed in captivating narratives that combine dark stories with brilliant humour. Among the many anime series out there, one particular show, Black Clover, has gained a loyal following since its inception in 2017. With a whopping 170 episodes released up until 2021, the series had fans eagerly awaiting its highly anticipated film. Finally, after a two-year wait, the film, titled “Sword of the Wizard King” arrived last month. However, my experience with the movie left me with mixed feelings, potentially dampened by Netflix’s involvement. In this blog post, I’d like to share my thoughts and explore the changes that made it feel like Black Clover had lost its original charm. Furthermore, I express my hope that the same fate doesn’t befall the manga adaptation.

As a dedicated fan of Black Clover, I was thrilled to hear that the film had been released. Netflix’s acquisition of the movie, which made it accessible at a lower cost than a trip to the cinema, added to the excitement.

Upon watching “Sword of the Wizard King” I couldn’t help but notice the reasons behind the film’s numerous delays. Unfortunately, Netflix seemed to have altered the essence of the series, thereby deflating my initial joy. While many people online expressed their enjoyment of the film, I found myself slightly disappointed. Although the fight scenes were executed well, the changes made to appeal to a broader audience transformed it into something different from the Black Clover I once loved.

One of the significant aspects that attracted me to Black Clover was the intense rivalry and occasional abuse between characters. It added depth to the relationships and created a unique atmosphere. Regrettably, these elements seemed to be missing in the film adaptation. While I won’t delve into specific details to avoid spoiling the experience for others, it felt as if the film had toned down the very essence that made Black Clover captivating. The spark that drew me in was gone, replaced with great fight scenes that lacked the series’ distinct flavour.

As a fan of the original series, my hope lies in the continuation of the manga. However, considering the alterations made to the film, I can’t help but worry if similar changes will be imposed on future adaptations. I sincerely hope this isn’t the case, as it would be a disservice to the source material and the loyal fanbase.

In sharing my thoughts on the Black Clover film released on Netflix, it is with a heavy heart that I express my concerns regarding the series’ future. While some viewers enjoyed the movie, I found it lacking the essence that initially captivated me. The alterations made to fit societal norms resulted in a diluted version of Black Clover, leaving me yearning for the original. Ultimately, I hope that Netflix refrains from taking on the series, as the fear of further dilution looms over the future of Black Clover in my eyes.
